5/7/2023 0 Comments Updating javaI've removed it from 99% of machines and am yet to have a complaint. Theres been a lot of talk about Java recently in the community and if you dont need it on all PC's dont install it. Java can be done via MSI/GPO Opens a new window however it didn't upgrade before (this might have changed) so you were left with different versions of it installed. Best tip I can give is keep the old versions handy as it sometimes requires you install the screwed up version again before you can uninstall it. However you'll find it sometimes doesn't uninstall the old version properly and you'll have a fight with it. ![]() You'll want to extract the MSI MSI installs are a lot easier. As mentioned above, use the JRE offline installer. Over time, I end up migrating most GPSI's over to LUP.Īnd specific to JRE (and a few other programs) unless you truly need JRE installed everywhere, you can set up LUP to upgrade JRE if it finds it on a machine, but to not install JRE if it isn't already installed. If a client doesn't have SCCM, I *ALWAYS* install LUP. Unlike GPO installs, it also offers reporting. It's a free, open-source add-on to WSUS that turns WSUS into a poor-man's SCCM, enabling it to install from MSI's or EXEs. Local Update Publisher works much better for me. So I've stopped using GPSI for JRE, and most other installs. And because it uses WSUS, WU downloads via BITS, so its viable over slow VPN connections where GPSI doesn't work at all. And unlike GPSI, LUP doesn't need a machine to be rebooted, because it uses the Windows Update engine on the client so it runs whenever updates are scheduled. ![]() And GPSI makes the manual fix hard to deal with because every machine restart involved with trying to fix it will try to install it again unless you disconnect from the network or edit the registry to prevent it. Other software is reliably installed by GPSI, but JRE seems to fail on about 10% of machines, and if it fails once, it will ALWAYS fail on that machine. ![]() I've always found Java installation by GPSI to be a horror story.
